How has the shift from Modernism to Post-modernism changed the ways in which art is perceived/understood? Currently what is the culture of art?
As a society, we started to see music along with installation and performance art as a part of art in the Post-modern term. We didn't view a poster as just a poster we saw the artistic connections. Currently, I feel that anything can be considered art depending on the location and the circumstance. Mary Anne Staniszewski said, "If we accept the fact that everything is shaped by culture, we then acknowledge that we create our reality." This is true for art because we say what we believe is art and also what we know is art (from other people who believe that it is art).

The effects of the avant-garde on popular culture and media.

When I think of avant-garde my first thought would be something so “out-there” in art something that would affect my thoughts or how I viewed the world but really I think avant-garde is just art that decides to focus on different aspects of art then traditional works. Avant-garde affected popular culture and media because it changed what we saw as being art and even the way we viewed art. Cubism and Surrealism are two good examples of avant-garde.  Cubism and surrealism made us rethink the way we looked at objects and our own perspective. Cubism made your mind put shapes together to form a object while surrealism, with its dream-like scenes, gave you familiar objects in a new way, The avant-garde wanted to redesign everything and using popular culture and media was a quick way to do so. They used any type of media to get their views across, such as exhibits, radios, films, magazines, etc. They wanted their ideas everywhere and they were successful getting the view of the avant-garde out to the public even if some did not agree with them.

Also speaking of the avant-garde you have to bring up Picasso who was the first to make collage. This is something I really enjoy in my art as well in life. Here our some images of Picasso's collages:

I have a piece (like the collage with the guitar) that I took from my high school art teacher and I never knew who the inspiration was... I just thought it was interesting so I took it. It's funny how those things work out.

Inspiration repeats.

collaboration

another collaboration I did with my friend that dealt with going to different locations in Milwaukee and showing different scenes with the same common subject. Our subject we picked was Chuck Taylors (the shoes)...
Here are some pictures of the layout. I will upload closer images later.

museum evolution and what it means to be "modern"

Art was not always displayed in nicely clean galleries in museums. They were part of a societies history, everyday life, and a decoration in someone’s home. It was not consider this art piece we see today blocked off my tape or rope saying “do not touch”. Galleries have paintings that filled entire wall space to “create a lively decorative scheme.” Now they are the museums we know now that preserve art.

What does it mean to be “modern?”
Well truthfully I still don’t know after reading descriptions and books about modern art. I feel that everything was modern at a point so how can we describe a certain type as being modern. Modern is seen in abstraction art and even in our society with advertising and television.

These are my thoughts after reading "Believing is Seeing" by Mary Anne Staniszewski

collaboration with northridge

well if you lived in Milwaukee for a long time you know what northridge is or was...
but for those who don't...
Northridge is a mall that was closed abt 8 years ago. I use to go there all the time partially because I lived so close and second because my grandma worked there. My original idea was to bring some life back into northridge  but the end result turned out a little ghostly.
Here are some images:

oh yeah... all of these images are unedited.
